Exemption criteria

In terms of schedule 11 of the Local Government Finance Act 1992, and the Council Tax (Exempt Dwellings) Scotland Order 1997 (as amended), a dwelling may be exempt from council tax if it is unoccupied and unfurnished. Exemption is for a maximum period of six months. If a house has had a period of unoccupied and unfurnished exemption, and you now wish to apply for a subsequent period of exemption, this is only possible if it has been occupied and furnished for at least three months in between.
